I can only recommend this hike. My husband and I did it in hot summer weather. Which was a good idea, because the light wind from the glacier made it a pleasant hike in these temperatures. If you start the hike from the Bettmerhorn mountain station, you have a constant view of the Aletsch Glacier for a good two hours. From the mountain station below the Bettmerhorn to the Fiescheralp mountain station, the route takes around three and a half hours.

Start at Bettmerhorn

We walked from the Bettmeralp mountain station to the cable car, which ends below the Bettmerhorn. Once there, we first went to the viewpoint on the Aletsch Glacier to enjoy the view. The hiking trail starts directly at the viewpoint and descends over rocky steps, always keeping to the right. On the way, you will pass a collection of cairns, always with a view of the glacier. The rocky path ends at a fork and you take the fork to the right towards Lake Märjelen. From here, you have plenty of time to take beautiful personal photos with and without the Aletsch Glacier.

View to Konkordiaplatz

After about an hour and a half you pass a fence gate, from then on the path becomes rockier again. Keeping to the right again, you descend over hill and dale. Looking ahead, you can already see Lake Märjelen. Looking back, take a look at the Konkordiaplatz. This is where the four firn basins Grosser Aletschfirn, Jungfraufirn, Ewigschneefäld and Grüneggfirn flow together and form the central moraines that give the large Aletsch Glacier its shape.

And you are already at the beautiful glacier edge lake, Lake Märjelen. Although the word lake seems a little exaggerated nowadays. But in other times, when the glacier still discharged a lot of meltwater into the lake, this lake was dangerous. When it overflowed, the lake caused devastating damage in the Fieschertal valley. Hard to imagine today.

From Lake Märjelen you can already see the restaurant Gletscherstube, where you can enjoy a well-earned break with homemade cake and elderflower syrup on the busy terrace.

Tälli trails, tunnels and Fiescheralp

Three tour variants are possible from the Gletscherstube: Unters Tälli leads around the mountain. The route over the Tälligrat ridge is clearly visible from the Gletscherstube. The third hiking route leads through the tunnel, the entrance to which is practically opposite the Gletscherstube. The tunnel is dead straight, you can actually see the light at the end of the tunnel and it's really cold in there, but you can walk through it in a quarter of an hour. A light jacket wouldn't have been a bad idea. All the paths more or less come together again behind the tunnel. From there you continue to the Fiescheralp mountain station. After half an hour's walk, the hiking tour ends there. From the Fiescheralp there are various ways to get back to Bettmeralp.
