From the Fiescheralp mountain station to the Eggishorn
I love viewing the Aletsch Glacier in perfect weather—which is exactly the case this autumn, 2026. That is why I am heading out on one hike after another. Since I like to go easy on my knees—and the descent doesn't exactly fit the bill—my husband and I often walk the route in reverse. Most hikers take the cable car up from Fiescheralp to the Eggishorn and then hike back down; because of my knees, I huff and puff my way up and take the cable car down.
Directions to the Eggishorn
The hike begins at the Fiescheralp mountain station, heading towards Bettmeralp. After passing Hotel Jungfrau and opposite the Bergfreund restaurant, the "Panorama" hiking trail (71b) starts on the right. The path follows a wide loop to the Flesch mountain station; this is a great spot to pause and enjoy the view. The route then becomes rocky as it continues toward Elselicka, where you get your first glimpse of the Great Aletsch Glacier. You proceed towards Eggishorn with views of the glacier. There are two more steep, rocky sections to tackle before you reach the end. At the Eggishorn viewpoint, a sweeping panorama awaits, stretching across the Aletsch Glacier all the way to Konkordiaplatz.
The hike takes over three hours and requires sturdy footwear. A reasonable level of fitness is also recommended, as the trek is quite strenuous—especially the final third. However, the sight of the glacier and the surrounding peaks—such as the Geisshorn, Grosses Fusshorn, and Olmenhorn—makes it well worth the effort. Once you are back at Fiescheralp via the cable car, stopping at one of the many restaurants is highly recommended. You can sit back and enjoy the view of the Valais mountains over coffee and cake, giving your knees a well-deserved rest.
