Golf tournament week in Riederalp

Who invented golf?

There is some disagreement about that. Scotland, Holland and Belgium are under discussion. There is even talk of China. The period of origin is the 15th century. The game was played with thin sticks and pebbles in the dunes, because sandy soil was not suitable for farming and grazing animals. Since people also wanted to play golf inland, they started to build golf courses.

Rules of Golf

The rules of golf can be found in Pieter van Afferden's Latin textbook from 1545, which speaks for the Netherlands. There it is defined, for example, that one may not obstruct the opponent during the swing, not even the view, and whoever makes an air shot loses. Interestingly, however, the Scottish variant has survived to this day. The first golf club with its own golf course was founded by the Gentlemen Golfers of Leith in Edinburgh, who also wrote down the rules of golf. In the meantime, the rules of golf have been established internationally by two organisations that have agreed on a uniform set of rules. There are currently 25 rules of golf, which can be found on the website of the R&A Rules Limited.
