Frühsommer – Zeit für Murmeltiere

Murmeltier am Aletsch

Are you also tired at the moment? It's called spring fatigue, isn't it? And why do you sleep like a marmot? Because the marmot sleeps for six months to get through the mountain winter. In spring or early summer, wild animals are seen again as they come out of their winter quarters to forage and breed. The marmot does this from mid-April, opens its eyes again after six months, looks for a bear or a cat and produces its first monkeys. Not from me. That's what the family members are called in hunter's slang. And a family of marmots is not exactly small. Up to 20 animals come together and their social behaviour even allows them to take in orphaned marmot children.

Why you should go on a hiking holiday

The Alps are still snow-covered, but the sun is already really coming out. Soldanelles and crocuses are blooming and will soon be replaced by gentian and alpine roses. Nature is changing back into a colourful picture. And the good thing about early summer in the mountains is that it's not yet so hot, and it's cool and quiet at night, which is great for spring tiredness. And after you've slept like a log, you can watch your mates on the daily hike. Can't hear them and can't find any?

Marmot weekend for families in June

There is a Marmot weekend for families in June. On 29 June at 10 a.m., meet at the Pro Natura Centre to watch the marmots eating, playing and lazing around.

Und täglich grüsst das Murmeltier – war klar, oder?
